Information filtering through from Labour sources suggest the Labour membership might have already surged to 650,000 in the last few weeks…
- The last time membership data was issued was on 31 December 2018, when it stood at 518,659 members.
- A Mirror source confirmed new joiners had hit 105,000 by the end of last week
- Some Labour sources are estimating its higher and that approx 150,000 have joined since the election.
The deadline to join the Labour Party and still be able to vote in the leadership election is 5pm this evening so there is expected to be a last minute surge to further boost the numbers. There’s a great deal of speculation over the reason why so many people have signed up, with some suggesting it might be a centrist driven surge that could impact Rebecca Long-Bailey’s chances at the ballot box while others are more of the opinion that it might be a response to the dire performance of the remain-alliance parties who not only failed to win any seats but helped to deliver the hard Brexit Tory election result.
