Well folks, we just proved that people power really works!
Your Party HQ have posted on X that a full list of candidates who managed to reach the endorsement threshold will be published next week (source). Needless to say, candidates that stood on the two slates are expected to go through without any difficulty.
The independent candidates, on the other hand, had a much steeper hill to climb, most of whom did not have much of a public profile and, asides from being up against candidates with leadership endorsement (which is what slates are, effectively), they were also up against lots and lots of other eager independents, all vying for regional support. Time constraints made it imperative for these candidates to find fast and innovative ways to raise their profiles. There were a number of initiatives in play, including people organising local hustings and I’m glad to say that Spotlight was also able to play our part. In fact, I’m very proud to say that 5 of the 8 candidates that we profiled managed to secure the endorsements they needed (although one candidate had to pull out, so we could have had 6). To build on this success, I’ve now set up the ‘Your Party Spotlight WhatsApp Network’. This is a non-factional WhatsApp group that welcomes Your Party members from across the UK. The primary goal is to provide a space for members to discuss ideas, suggest and debate motions, network and collaborate on campaigns. It’s also a space for members to promote public events (not exclusively Your Party events) that we can publish and promote on the Spotlight Your Party Diary page. The broad remit here is that we work together to empower the membership and we network and collaborate to win elections and get results.
I will of course continue to accept submissions for candidate profiles, as I genuinely believe Your Party members deserve to have a fuller picture of all the candidates standing in order to make better informed decisions.
