Here are just some of the changes being brought in by the Conservative government this year…
January
Rail fares will be hiked by 2.7%
April
Government to ditch the Adult Dependency component of the state pension (worth about £3,500 a year, or approx. £70pw)
June
Free TV licenses will now only be available to people on pension credits
October
State pension age will rise to 66
Also, in the past week alone, a number of councils (Bradford, Liverpool, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Bedfordshire, Telford, Staffordshire, Stoke on Trent, York, Mid Suffolk, Warwickshire, Barnet and most Welsh councils) have reported they’ll be looking to increase council tax to cover vital services and make up for government cuts to council budgets.
No doubt there will be more austerity policies and council tax increases to report over the coming weeks and months, as we get closer to the Brexit cliff edge.
