The Labour Party have chosen to whip up far right extremism and demonise Muslims just 5yrs on from the murder of Jo Cox MP who was shot and stabbed by a far right extremist in Batley and Spen.
Owen Jones explains that the Labour right are grasping at straws now because things are falling apart for them in a big way. Starmer’s polling is pitiful, Labour recently lost Hartlepool – a constituency that’s been a Labour seat for decades – and they’re expecting to lose in Batley & Spen in the upcoming by-election. However, rather than accept any responsibility for their failure, the Labour right have decided they should shift blame for their failures onto Muslims – one of the most demonised and persecuted minorities in the UK. A Labour party strategist, who chose to remain anonymous, told the Mail on Sunday that Labour was “haemorrhaging” Muslim voters because they are anti-Semitic and, as such, don’t approve of Starmer’s alleged crack down on anti-Semitism in the party. Singling out Muslims for blame is diabolical on so many levels. Asides from being Islamophobic and racist, it allows the Labour right to assert that they still have the support of the non-Muslim (typically white), majority. This is a deliberate move to sew division.
It seems that, despite the fact that Jo Cox was fatally shot and stabbed in Batley & Spen on 16th June 2016 (almost exactly 5yrs ago) by a neo-Nazi and Britain First supporter, or the fact that she was targeted because of the work that she did with migrants and Muslim refugees, none of this matters to the Labour right. What Jo Cox stood for, her memory, it doesn’t matter. Maintaining control of the Labour Party literally takes precedence over everything else and they’re even prepared to risk peoples lives and piss on the memory of Jo Cox in order to achieve that goal.
According to the ONS, As of August 2018, the UK Muslim population stood at 3,372,966. According to the 2011 census there were 26 parliamentary constituencies where Muslims accounted for over 20% of the population. The results of the 2021 census are not yet available but the expectation is that these population figures will have grown and that there might be more constituencies with larger Muslim populations today…
The question that any genuine Labour supporter should be asking themselves now is ‘what’s the end game here?’ Labour, under the control of right wing factions, has already turned it’s back on Scotland and on the so-called red wall and now it’s turning it’s back on the most loyal of all Labour supporting groups – Muslim voters. If the end game was to make Labour as unelectable as possible then, they may well have achieved their goal because I can’t see many Scots, Leave voters or Muslims able to stomach ever voting Labour again. Frankly, I doubt that anything less than a total regime change could turn around Labour’s electoral fortunes now.
