Leaked Windrush Lessons Learned Review recommends the government put a stop to the deportation of people who came over to the UK as children but the government are deliberately ignoring the recommendations and deporting people anyway.
At this week’s PMQ’s, Boris Johnson stubbornly defied calls to stop the ongoing deportations and described the deportees as “foreign national offenders”, an allegation that has been hotly disputed by politicians and many of the families with loved ones now awaiting deportation who argue they are neither “foreign nationals” nor “offenders”.
The government’s current policy to deport people who, many would argue, have a legitimate right to stay and live in the UK, seems almost reminiscent of the 18th & 19th century policy to transport so-called “convicts” to Australia, most of whom were petty criminals who were conveniently shipped off for minor misdemeanours. In fact, most of the 50 Jamaicans who are scheduled to be deported next week are said to have minor criminal convictions, for which they have already served their sentences.
