Authorities working to remove fuel from the MV Wakashio, the Japanese oil carrier that ran aground on a reef in Mauritius last month, have reported that the ship has “broken apart”
The MV Wakashio hit the reef and became lodged about 3 weeks ago. It has already leaked about 1,000 tonnes of fuel oil into the ocean and caused an ecological disaster that will impact the local corals, fish and other marine life for decades to come. Although most of the remaining oil has now been pumped out, there’s still about 166 tonnes of oil onboard that has still to be removed but with these new developments and given the fact that the weather is now turning (they’re expecting waves nearly 5 metres high over the next few days), authorities are taking the decision to implement a “towing plan” following expert advice.
